Lesson 29:12Tutorial

Filming on Your Phone Like a Pro

Light, frame and steady your phone footage so it looks clean and professional.

Your phone is all the camera you need. The difference between amateur and professional-looking footage is almost always light, stability and framing, not equipment.

Light first

Film facing a window in soft daylight. Avoid overhead lights that cast shadows under your eyes, and switch off lamps with a different colour of light.

Settings that matter

  • Film in 4K or 1080p at 30 frames per second.
  • Lock focus and exposure by pressing and holding on your subject.
  • Clean your lens before every shoot.

A simple tripod or a stack of books keeps the shot steady. Frame vertically for social content and leave a little headroom.

Your action steps

  • 1Find the best window light in your home at different times of day
  • 2Set your camera to 1080p or 4K at 30 frames per second
  • 3Practise locking focus and exposure on a product
  • 4Film a 15-second steady clip using a tripod or a stack of books
